updated to iOS8 and now locked out of my iPad. Never had a passcode but now it wants one?. Please help

I updated my ipad2 when prompted to iOS 8, during update I never put in a passcode as I've never needed one. AFter update completed is asked for a passcode whihc I don't have. It's locked me out.

I tried resetting to an earlier iOS but nothing works just keeps asking for the unknown passcode.

Can anyone suggest how to get out of this lock out?.

Thanks

iPad 2, iOS 8

Did you buy the iPad second-hand (used)? It sounds if a previous owner has set up 'Activation Lock', though the symptom of this is it asking for an ID (and showing a partial email address) rather than a numerical code.

If a second-hand iOS device has been 'Activation locked' then only the previous owner can unlock it, either by providing you with the account ID and password, or by removing it from his list of devices (as he should have done before selling it) - please see http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4515

If you are unable to contact him to do this then I'm afraid you will not be able to use the device - there is no other way of unlocking it at all. Apple cannot unlock it for you.

You should if possible return it to wherever you bought it and ask for a refund as in this event the device is completely useless.

If on the other hand it's not this but a passcode issue your next step would be to do a full reset and restore from your iTunes backup.

Thanks for your reply,

The iPad was purchased by my work and setup by our systems admin. It was then given to me when I left 3 years ago. It has worked OK since then and I never had to enter a passcode before this update. It was unfortunate that I updated as it was accidental. I saw the install request and tried to cancel it, but miss hit the icon and it went into update mode. I didn't want to stop it and thought it was just a matter of letting it update and it would return OK when complete.

During the update it asked for a code but I just selected continue, as I don't need one. Unfortunately it continues to ask for one now no matter what I do.

I have tried to reset it by following the instructions on the Apple support site but after about 80 minutes of downloading nothing happens and it remains locked.

I have my account ID and password but is this the same as the passcode?..

I can't believe that an update can trash an expensive device like this rendering it completely useless.
