The directions for changing where they go are in this thread

for existing files simply use the finder to drag them where you want - they are no different than any other file on your Mac and you mange them exactly like al other files

As to why? Ask Apple - we are users just like you and have no information on why anything

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the reply. I tried dragging, but it wouldn't let me drag to screen shot (though I could drag to other "folders". I tried working with the command line, but it seems they aren't organized in folders. I finally brought the photo up on my iPhone and took a screen shot there.

If any one from Apple reads this, perhaps you could explain the underlying philosophy. I thought one of Apple's selling points is a uniform experience across devices.

This discussion is about the folder, where the Finder on a Mac is saving screenshots. It is not about the "Screenshots" album you are seeing in Photos on an iOS device. Are you asking about the Screenshots album in Photos?

The screenshot album is a smart album and automatically populated by screenshots taken on an iOS device - an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. You cannot add photos manually to a smart album.

To change the screenshot capture location to a new place on your Mac, first think of a location that would serve you properly. We like to place ours in a "Screenshot" folder located inside of the User's "Pictures" folder. To change the location to this new location, open the Terminal and enter the following command:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location /Users/[u]/Pictures/Screenshots/

Replace "[u]" with the name of the user on your system. Once you have entered this command, let's restart the screen capture utility by restarting the SystemUIServer by entering the following command:

killall SystemUIServer

You can optionally log out and back in instead of entering this second command, thus restarting the SystemUIServer. Once restarted, all screen captures taken from here on out will end up in your /Pictures/Screenshots/ folder in the User's home folder on your Mac.
