My iMac's name has a number in parentheses at the end that keeps changing. Why?
I'm running OS 10.10.3, but it was doing the same thing with prior versions. This causes problems when other divices are trying to communicate.
Where do you see it? can you make a screen shot and post it here?
I see it in finder side bar on the iMac and other devices that recognize the iMac.

That between the () is not part of the name: the number varies whether there is only you logged in or more of your computers: they are all registered in your account, switch all off from the network so that you do not see them and then log in one only and there will be no number.
This is a Yosemite bug that persists despite Apple's repeated attempts to rectify it.
Power down all your network devices - router, Macs, AppleTV if you have one, everything that can possibly have a network connection.
Then power them up again. That may fix it. If it does, it may occur again anyway.
with all due respect, this doesn't solve the issue
and where it matters is that when that computer name changes, printers connected to that machine can no longer be seen on the network by other computers.
so this is more than a novelty--it's a nuisance.
Apple fixed this before. But the dam has broken again.
