The ringtone I made and have used for years on iPhone 5 no longer works in 8.3

I've been using a ringtone I made years ago on my iPhone 5 and with the latest update in iOS the ringtone no longer plays when a message comes in. I checked it in the options and it plays there but when a message comes in, silence. If this is something Apple no longer supports I would ask why? Are they trying to take all the fun out of our lives. People used to love hearing my ringtone when a message arrived.

I have created several ringtones & have no problem using them on my iPhone 5s with iOS 8.3.

Is the ringtone under 40 seconds long & in the correct format .m4r?

Yes it is. It's 3 seconds and in the .m4r format. I used it since I first bought my phone.

One thing I've noticed, not that this has anything to do with it but... I named my phone xxx since I've had it, now when I hook it up to iTunes it shows up as xxx (2). Any idea what this is about?

I had the original file so I made another ringtone file and synced the phone. It works.
