Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

my laptop (MacPro) is so slow, with the 'beachball' spinning and delays. Is this because I've got so much junk in files?

I have a MacBook Pro laptop and it's full of junk, I'm sure. Maybe that's the reason for it being slow and balky.

In applications like Microsoft Office 2008, it gives me fits! Herky-jerky responses, with the beachball spinning.

Is there any good way to clean it up and getting it running smoothly?

I'm not very tech-oriented--I just want to use it with less frustration.

Thanks.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

ok, it just happened again, only this time I got a message. I was on FIrefox reading the Washington Post, and the beachball spun for a bit and the message said something about "scripts". there were choices: one was 'debug', so I chose that. I got a huge bunch of what I'm sure is important info.

I know you said NOT to take a screen shot, but I cannot describe it since there's no title page, it only shows on the bottom half of my screen and it doesn't want to move.

So: would it help to see the screen shot, or is it totally unimportant?

Hi,

I must have a different system from your MacPro. There's none of the features you cite in my computer.

Utilities doesn't have a "system log queries", etc.

I have downloaded the Etrecheck and have a report with bunches of red comments Sounds dire! Don't know how to put them into any document here. Now on my CLipboard. (See Oglethorpe above.)

Ogelthorpe: Is this helpful at all? Looks like many problems. Should I take it to an Apple repair place for work?

thnx, JN

Problem description:

Slow to respond, with hesitation before typed text is shown in Word document. Also, spinning ‘beachball’ cursor with “script” message sometimes shown.,.sometimes not. Hard to get out of this mode. No ‘shut-off valve’!

I really don't know how to do that. The app shows "not running" and when the FIX IT sign comes on, it doesn't respond.

So, maybe it's already off?

I am not familiar with that specific software, but cloud backup storage can have an adverse affect on computer performance. Perhaps if you were to temporarily uninstall it, then you could see if it affects the performance of your MBP positively.

Ciao.

my laptop (MacPro) is so slow, with the 'beachball' spinning and delays. Is this because I've got so much junk in files?
