1TB 5k iMac issue with Bootcamp

Hey All,

I know you have probably come across this a few times but I have been dealing with Apple support and they have offered me no help.

I had a MBP before and has no issues installing windows but i have tried windows 7/8/and 10 tech preview and it hasnt worked.

it is telling me that i need to partition it to NTFS or it wont install when i am in windows install. i have tried doing this and deleting the partition, i have tried formatting in windows, i have even tried getting a third party ntfs file format for osx. all have failed.

please help. i bought a $3000 machine with no support for windows it seems 😟

thanks!

Your iMac will work fine, chances are it's simply that you are not installing correctly and don't know how to seek help. Also, you don't state how you are attempting to install Windows, if it's using Boot Camp then please at least say so or if you are using virtualization software indicate that. If you are using Boot Camp simply launch Boot Camp Assistant (Applications - Utilities - Boot Camp Assistant) and follow the on-screen instruction. If you are using virtualization then follow the instructions the developers provided. Finally, there is no need to rant about Apple or the cost of your iMac. Then search for the appropriate forum, such as the Boot Camp forum or a Parallels forum and someone will help you.

Sorry about that, was not meant to be a rant about anything Apple did poorly or anything. Just searching for some empathy.

this is my first time posting on these forums so excuse me if i come across as a bit ignorant because, when it comes to them i am.

I am using bootcamp, it partitions the drive for me. when it reboots into windows i see 4 different drives, one of which says drive 0 partition 4 : bootcamp.

At the bottom it says "drive must be formatted to ntfs", this is where i am stuck because i would assume that bootcamp would have done this for me..HAve you ever seen anything like this? (if this is the wrong forum to post in, could you direct me to the right one?).

thanks Friend!.

BCA does not/will not format the partition to NTFS. BCA does not have a read-write NTFS capability by default. It creates a FAT (FAT32) partition which is formatted by the installer. Click on the BOOTCAMP partition. You should see Format at the bottom of your screen (or Advanced Options). Click on it and format it to NTFS. This will enable the 'Next' button. Click on Next and continue your installation.

Please see https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2 for reference. Do not pick any other partition. You may see Partition 4 (not Partition 3 - the screen shot is from a Snow Leopard machine which has no recovery HD).

The 1TB Fusion drive is much easier to address than the 3TB Fusion drive. 😉

Do you see all the four entries on the screen? It is possible that BCA failed, and got caught in no man's land between a Hybrid MBR and GPT partitioning.

Unfortunately, to diagnose this further, you may have to quit the installer and switch back to OSX and post the output of the the following commands from OSX Terminal. The commands are

diskutil list

diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Sudo commands require your password, which will not be echoed back to you. You may also see a warning about improper use and potential data loss, if abused.
