I Purchased iTunes Match on my MacBook Pro and have just turned on iTunes Match on my iPad which had 7000 songs on. I have lost the lot. The only songs in my music library are about 150 which I purchased from iTunes. How can I get my songs and playlists back?

No, there were no songs on the MacBook Pro, they were all on the iPad from my old computer. I hoped that by opening iTunes match all songs on the iPad would be available to the Mac Pro and my iPhone. They are not they have just disappeared!
I'm sorry you had to learn this the hard way. As detailed at Subscribe to iTunes Match - Apple Support : "When you subscribe to iTunes Match from an iOS device, your local tracks (tracks that live on your device) will not be matched or uploaded to iCloud. Sign in with your Apple ID on a computer to match and upload your local music library."
I Feared as much - £21 to lose my entire music collection! I could weep!
