Random Shut Down

Random Shut Down

For the past several days I have closed my computer and sometimes when I open it again it will not respond or turn back on. I have waited several minutes, tried tapping the space bar and mouse. The only thing that works is holding down the power button and sometimes that doesn't work. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Thanks! I did try this and it worked at first but a bunch of other software issues showed up. I ended up updating to Yosemite and so far that seems to have worked.
