Thinking of buying my 4 year old grandson his first iPad. I don't understand the technical specifications. Would a refurbished 1st gen iPad give him access to most educational apps?
Unfortunately no. First gen iPads cannot update past iOS 5..5 while most apps require at least iOS 6. so while you may be able to find some Apps that work on a first gen iPad, at this point they are going to be very very few. And probably none of the newer educational Apps.
I'd go for at least a Second Generation iPad. Though its unlikely you'll find a refurbished iPad 2 in the Refurbished section of the online Apple store at this point.
Which incidentally is the only source of Apple certified refurbished devices from Apple.
