Can't download garageband with "slow" internet

I am trying to upgrade the free Garageband to the one available online. It is a big download (17GB?) and it says it will just continue to work on it each time Garageband is active. However, with my connection (~3Mbps), it actually seems to give up after a couple of hours and start completely over.
