Problem Backing Up iMac to External Drive - Target Disk Mode

I'm trying to backup everything on an old iMac (2009, I think) to an external FW hard drive by using Target Disk Mode.

I have everything set up correctly and the transfer begins fine but part of the way through, it stops with a Permissions error on a file. When I click Continue, the process just stops.

How can I get around the Permissions error?
