Glad to have helped. And by the way, I have a blog where I post solutions of this kind (though not yet this one):

Thx Aaron for the initial discovery, thx MKZA for clarifying the procedure, and thx to Greg for finally supplying the download URL.

I used Pacifist to install Quicktime 7.3.1 many years ago, great app!

Thanks AaronShep. This worked, the Apple fix did not.

Just called Apple support... here is the official fix.

    1) Move all files from /Library/QuickTime/ to a temp older on desktop

    2) Open AppStore and download/install update

    3) Reboot

    4) Copy any missing files from temp folder on desktop to /Library/QuickTime. For me this was 1 file, AppleMPEG2Codec.component.

    Hope this helps someone!

The above method did not work for me. I had already done the software update and it was appearing again as an available update. After rebooting all of the files were there, none were missing, and the App Store is still listing the update as available. Time to try the Pacifist method, I guess.

    This worked for me, thanks.

Although this did not explain what the exact issue was and not sure if any other ramification,s it did work. Would like to know what was actually causing the issue.

Thanks. Worked. Apple can do better than this. This shouldn't happen. My OCD has to have everything in order ya know. With this fixed I can end my hunger strike. ;-)

    Had the same issue.

I decide to call Apple support, while waiting on the phone I found this thread, but I decided to hear what Apple had to say. Senior adviser suggested to restart in a safe mode. The update ProVideoFormat 2.0.1 was not showing. After restarting the computer in a regular mode, the problem disappeared.

I was really curious what killed the update loop. The senior adviser said that most likely some quick time plugins were still running in the back, and going from the safe mode to regular one killed the process. Therefore one of the solutions moving all files from /Library/QuickTime/ to a temp older on desktop, made sense.

    Hope this helps some people.

I spent 1.5 hours looking for a fix for this rather than doing the work I was meant to be doing. I'm sure I would have spent longer if not for you. Thanks for posting, you deserve much good karma!

Check the box "Don't ask for this installation again." and click 'replace'.

The safe mode solution worked only one day. So I decided to try odinsdad solution, which worked fine.

Hope this will last for more than one day,

    Thanks!

I found on MacRumours a solution that worked for me.

    Install Pacifist

Download the .dmg for the provideo update from apple,

    install it using Pacifist.

Based upon the information here, I downloaded the ProVideo Codecs, moved all items out of /Library/QuickTime and rand the installer.  Afterward I moved the missing components back into /Library/QuickTime and retested the Updates.  This resolved the issue for me.  Looking at the components that were installed, I believe it would only be necessary to remove the following items:

    AppleAVCIntraCodec.component

    AppleHDVCodec.component

    AppleIntermediateCodec.component

    AppleMXFImport.component

    AppleProResCodec.component

    DVCPROHDCodec.component

    FCP Uncompressed 422.component

    IMXCodec.component

I used the link from another submission to download: Pro Video Formats 2.0.1
