Q: I upgraded to OS X and now my iPhoto application is gone

I recently upgraded to OS X (Yosemite) and my iPhoto application/library is gone.  When I click on "application", I get a message that says I have to download the latest version for free from the Mac App Store, but when I go there, it says that the item requested is not currently available in the US store.  How can I retrieve my photos?

iPhoto '11, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

This didn't work. When I go to Purchases, iPhoto is in there with a tab to Update. Click on Update and you get diddly-squat. Personally, I'm ****** that there was no notice given that iPhoto was being removed. The article they post regarding iPhoto use after Photos is installed is a big fat lie. The program is greyed out in my app folder and any attempt to update or reinstall is met with a big fat NOPE - ain't gonna happen. And crickets from Apple.

I was looking for the same thing and when I clicked iPhotos I got the same message and then I found the Photos app in my launch pad and all my images were in there.

iPhoto is not removed. You just have an out-of-date version. Look at my instructions above, again. Note the bit about deleting iPhoto first.

Your profile says you're using 10.10.2 is that correct or are you using 10.10.3. ??

10.10.3  downloaded the new Photos app which you'll see in your dock.

All your photos from iPhoto will be in the new Photos App in your dock.

That's not correct.  The Photos app has to be run and convert the existing iPhoto Library to a Photos Library where the photos are kept, not in the application.

If the user was using iPhoto 9.6.1 previously they can still run iPhoto on their iPhoto Library while using Photos on the converted Photos Library.
