You can't convert songs in the Music app on your iPhone into ringtones, if you want to use it as your ringtone you will have to use your computer and then sync it back as a tone.

e.g.

- copy it to your computer's iTunes library, or redownload it from Purchased on your computer's iTunes

- select/highlight it in the My Music part of your library and do 'get-info' (control-I on a PC ; command-I on a Mac)

- change its start and/or end times so that its length is a maximum of 30 seconds (I think 30 seconds is still the limit)

- exit the 'get-info' popup and right-click (control-click on a Mac) the song, and select 'create AAC version (if you have something else showing, e.g. 'create MP3 version', then you will first have to change your music import settings on the General tab in iTunes preferences). That will create a new, shortened, version of the track

- delete that new entry from the My Music part of your iTunes library (but don't delete the actual music file)

- find that new track on your computer (windows explorer, or finder on a Mac)

- change its file extension to be .m4r instead of .m4a

- drag that file into iTunes, or use File > Add To Library in iTunes to add it

- it should go into the Tones part of your iTunes library, and you can sync it to your phone

You've done the above steps e.g.

- selected the music track, done 'get-info', and on its Options tab changed its Start and/or End times so that it's at most 30 seconds long (and exited the 'get-info' popup)

- with the track still selected done File > Convert > Create AAC version (on recent versions of iTunes it's no longer possible to right-click a track and convert it via the popup options)

- used Finder to change that new track's extension from .m4a to .m4r

- deleted the new track from My Music section of your iTunes library (but not deleted the actual .m4r file)

- dragged-and-dropped the .m4r file into your iTunes, or done File > Add To Library, to add it

Did you do those last two steps ? When I do that, and I've just tried it again to make sure, the .m4r file goes into the Tones section of my iTunes library, not Music

When you sync it to your phone it should show in Settings > Sounds > Ringtone if you want to set it as your default ringtone for everyone. It should also show in the Contacts app (to set it for an individual contact) if you select a contact, tap Edit top right, and scroll down to the Ringtone setting

I have deleted the track and have the file in the iTunes folder (unknown artist), plus on the desktop, plus in a secure position. But not in the title list, of course.

When I want to add it with the menu command to the library, it let me choose the file, but following the name is not shown in the library, and syncing the iPhone does no matter.
