I would like to reset apple tv to factory setting through usb hookup to my macbook pro

I have moved to abroad for a year and taken apple tv with me. my wifi is new and i did not bring the remote that came with apple tv thinking i could use the remote app on my iPhone. After connecting apple tv to a TV HDMI port I was unable to do anything without the remote. I have read that I could reset apple tv through iTunes but this is not working as the apple tv device does not show up. what can i do do reset apple tv to factory ship settings so i can start fresh, presuming i can use my remote app.
