Unable to install third party effects/titles. Missing folders in Motion Template.

Hi. I am unable to install third-party titles/effects/generators in FCP X version 10.2. I navigate to my Movies/Motion Templates folder and there are no subfolders in there. I created new ones labeled "Titles", "Generators", etc and placed the complete folder of the third party effects in the appropriate subfolder, but the effects do not show up in FCP X. I am on a managed laptop and do not have Administrative control. I am wondering if because I have a user profile with limited installation control, could that be affecting my ability to add the effects or is there something else that is wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1) The following folders need to be "localized": Motion Templates; Effects; Titles; Transitions; Generators.

This means select the folder, press Command-I, and add the ".localized" extension in the Get Info window, so that it looks like this:

User uploaded file

2) For each effect you add (likewise for the other templates): you must place the whole folder inside a "category" folder under Effects. For example:

User uploaded file

The category can be named anything you want - that name will appear in FCP X. You should group related effects in a suggestively named category, and can create as many categories as you need.

NOTE: the category folders and the folders of the templates themselves are NOT supposed to be "localized".

Thanks Jim, but unfortunately that did not help. Since FCP X was initially installed, my Motion Templates folder was completely empty. It had no subfolders and I couldn't access any of the effects. I created the subfolders and added the ".localized" extension in the File Info Window under "Names and Extensions" like you suggested, but still nothing shows up in FCP X. I am seriously considering that it has to be due to the security preferences that are set up by my administrator. Unfortunately, since my Admin purchased the program, and I'm offsite, I can't try to reinstall FCP X. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks you Jim and Luis. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Unfortunately, neither of those suggestions worked. All folders have ".localized" as their extension and I rest all of the FCP X preferences. I watched as the IT Admin installed FCP X onto the laptop. It was a straight install from the App store. No preferences needed to be set. After it was purchased, it installed and was ready for use. This is getting frustrating.

Preferences do get corrupted rather often, and deleting them is usually one of the first thing one tries whenever something strange happens in FCP X.

How exactly did you delete the preferences? The current method of choice is by holding down the command and option keys when starting the application and then confirming when the dialog box comes up.

I have not tried running FCP X from a non admin user account. Whether this could be the issue, I can't say.

Can you post screenshots of a Finder window, in column view, showing the folder structure inside Motion Templates?

I finally got it to work. I did use the command + option keys when opening FCP X and it did erase my Preferences. Nothing worked originally, but when I went back to take screenshots of the folder structure, I saw that the extensions I put on the subfolders were gone. Once I added them back and restarted FCP X, everything showed up. Thank you both for all of your help. This made all of the hours of frustration worth it.
