when i try to download something from the app store it tells me "this application requires iOS 7.0 or later." and when i try to update it it says up to date at iOS 6.1.6 what do i do? (by the way this is an ipod 4th generation)

You can more easily just try downloading an app from the iOS App Store, directly.
If the app developer left an older, compatible version of their app on Apple's download servers, you'll get a pop uo window stating that the app has an older, compatible version for you to download and if you wish to download it!

If your iPod Touch is a 4th generation or earlier, you can't upgrade the iOS to anything newer.
