Q: after restoring my apple tv it finds the wifi network successfully then gets hung up on finding the date

date and time hang up on apple tv

AppleTV 2, Windows 7, netgear router

It's not properly connected to the network

 

Make sure location is set correctly

DNS should be set to auto (settings - general - network)

Try ethernet

    Still doesn't explain why the wifi connection wasn't working properly. Also this is a messy business, having to remove the TV and place it near the computer so that the ethernet cable can be used. Then disconnect, take the TV back to the other room and connect again. So now it is connecting porperly via wifi. How come?

    Yes it does, there is an issue with the wifi network. There are many variables so if you don't want to use ethernet you will need to troubleshoot. If the Apple TV is not in the same room as the router then that is leaving more room for interference, you will likely encounter intermittence with the connection.
