Where can I find what the error messages of Time Machine means?

Checking my System Log Queries I found the following:

Could not back up OS X Recovery to /Volumes/Backup2/Backups.backupdb: Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-10 "Could not create com.apple.Boot.plist for recovery set" (kCFURLUnknownError / dsMacsBugInstalled: ) UserInfo=0x7fed8b312100 {NSLocalizedDescription=Could not create com.apple.Boot.plist for recovery set}

Can anyone explain what this means, and is it "fatal" in such a way that the backup made is useless for restoring? Where can I find documentation for such messages?

I don't know what that message is trying to tell you, but it looks like it can't write to your backup disk.

Launch the Console application. The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an abnormal backup. Now

CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD

so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

First, you should get rid of "Time Machine Editor." Either use Time Machine as designed, or use something else that better suits your needs. Don't try to hack it if you care about the safety of your data.

Your data was backed up, but the Recovery system was not. That means you wouldn't be able to start up in Recovery mode from the backup drive. Is the backup volume encrypted, and if so, did you encrypt it from within Time Machine?

I just switched off Time Machine Editor to determine it might be the cause of this specific behaviour and error message. The backup volume is not encrypted. What is the value of " ...Backup completed successfully..." but the Recovery set isn't although it is also a part of the backup?

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

Thanks for answering.

I have an SSD for the OS , programs and their libraries and an internal HDD for "other things" and have created symbolic links to folders on the hdd. In fact most of my homefolder is on the HDD.

When I reinstall the OS, do I have to create all these symbolic links again?

The Time Machine problem is solved. Those are mostly routine log messages, though you might have some minor issues with Spotlight. If there's no functional problem, you can ignore the messages.
