Mac runs super slow and apps not responding

MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

Everything, including browsers (Firefox, Chrome) is running extremely slow; frequently watching the pinwheel/beachball. Apps (Excel for Mac, screenshot apps, etc.) get hung up an eventually unresponsive and have to Force Quit.

Any advice on how to resolve? MacBook is from 2010 ...

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

There may be other issues, but the Spotlight index is corrupt.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/.Spotlight-V100

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Open

from the contextual menu. A folder should open with a subfolder named ".Spotlight-V100" selected. Move the subfolder to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer. If you try to search now from the magnifying-glass icon in the top right corner of the display, there should be an indication that indexing is in progress.

You can't see the folder in the Trash because it's invisible. The next time you empty the Trash, it should be deleted.

Apr 23, 2015 1:24 PM in response to Linc Davis

Linc, The folder opened but there was no subfolder. I thought maybe it was hidden so I changed to show hidden files (see below).

I right clicked, chose Services > Open and same result (no subfolder).

I right clicked, chose Services> Reveal in Finder

Saw the folder, attempted to open and got the message:

The folder “.Spotlight-V100” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.

I am the only user; and admin.

Show hidden files:

  • Open Terminal found in Finder > Applications > Utilities.
  • In Terminal, paste the following: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES.
  • Press return.
  • Hold 'alt' on your keyboard, then right click on the Finder icon in the dock and click Relaunch.

Have you checked your FileVault.....??

If FileVault is busy encrypting the data files, it slows down the computer drastically.

You can’t pause the Filevault ones started and you will have to wait until it finishes file encryption. That may be the reason of your browsers slowdown.

The reason you are getting beach ball is because you are running out of RAM. Install at least 8 GB of RAM and it will solve the problem of Browsers and other application slowdown.

Remove Google Chrome and Firefox immediately as these are resource hogs. You can use Safari instead. Its never a good idea to install more than one browser.

I can also see that you are running VM ware virtual machine on a 4 GB RAM. Uninstall it now and only install back when you upgrade your RAM.

Hope my suggestion will help you.......
