Macbookpro8,1 random shutdowns under latest version of Yosemite

I've seen lots of posts about this, but no answers. My MBP (13" late 2011) shuts down randomly and intermittently (sometimes it works fine for an extended period). No indication of a kernel panic, when I start up again there is no dialog about shutting down improperly or crashing. I've run the original Apple Hardware Test, as well as all the hardware tests on the new TechTool 8 (memory, motherboard, fans, sensors, battery, etc.) and used SMART Utility to check my drives (I have two OWC SSDs installed). I've opened up the case and blown out the dust and reseated the memory and all cables. I've reset the SMC and PRAM. I've travelled with my laptop a lot this year and it's been jarred plenty but nothing appears to be wrong. I don't know what to do next, and the problem is intermittent enough that it will probably be hard for Apple to track down.

Any ideas?

I have seen so many Etrecheck reports and have suggested some very helpful tweaks to improve the performance of their machine without the need of reinstalling the Mac OS X.

But after seeing your Etrecheck report I am Afraid, the number of unnecessary items will definitely slow down your mac later soon if not now.

Its my humble request to reinstall your original OS X and only install the applications which you really need. Let me know how the installation goes.....

And also, you have for Clean my Mac 2 software which is known to delete the vital OS X files. So, anyways you will have to reinstall the entire OS X.

Hope you got my point.....

Hope this helps......

Well, I used Activity Monitor to kill discovered. I just had another shutdown. Why doesn't the computer see this as a "crash" and give me a warning dialog when I start up, either telling me I did not shut down properly or that a kernel panic had occurred? It's like the OS doesn't even SEE these shutdowns. Are there any log files that would tell me anything?

BTW, I don't suspect the RAM as I've put it through its paces with as number of tests, and it's been functioning flawlessly for years (I've used my laptop for digital audio on the road, which is very RAM intensive).

Apr 23, 2015 3:45 PM in response to Smashprod

That Mac has been hobbled by a plethora of ill-conceived junk. Its memory is also the incorrect speed for that model Mac, which can cause unexpected behavior and crashes. Replace it with correct memory. Other than Apple I can recommend only two sources of Mac memory: OWC / MacSales, and Crucial. Other, PC-centric vendors generally sell memory that does not meet Apple's stringent specifications.

Software: at a minimum, "CleanMyMac", "Cocktail", "Drive Genius", "Intego" and "TechTool Pro" must be removed. Refer to their individual uninstallation instructions and include the comments that follow the horizontal line below.

Reinstalling OS X will have no effect.

In addition, that Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file

It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.

There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.

Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.

Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

  • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
  • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
    • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
    • When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
    • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
    • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X

To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

Smashprod wrote:

Why do you say this? The only problem I see is that discoveryd is using too much CPU time, which seems to be a common problem with the latest OS, and there are workarounds until Apple fixes it.

I'm going to have to agree with Grane Duke here. Why is discoveryd using so much CPU time? As you say, it is a common problem. But there is no guarantee that Apple will ever fix it. What do you do in the meantime?

Apple only tests its systems with Apple software. With all of your system modifications, your computer really isn't running the same operating system that Apple tested and that the rest of us are running. I'm not saying that you have done anything wrong. This is a complex issue involving Apple, 3rd party software developers, and the whole industry really. Things aren't like they were a few years ago. I could speculate about the details but you probably don't care. You just want your machine to stop shouting down.

I think it is a good idea to start fresh. Erase your drive and reinstall the operating system. Restore your machine with only user documents, no applications. Then, only install the applications that you really can't live without. Pay special attention to anything that asks for your password. These are the ones that are likely to modify your operating system and cause conflicts. See if there is a more recent version available and use that. Make sure to have an official uninstaller or uninstallation instructions handy. Never try to manually delete files. Never use an "app zapper". Then stop. Don't install anything else for a while. If your machine starts to act up again, you know it is probably the software you installed last. Remove it and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then you have found the culprit. Repeat the procedure for the rest of the software you really want to run. Send feedback to the developers of any software that causes problems.

Unfortunately this advice doesn't do me much good. Although some of the extensions, daemons, etc. are ones I could get rid of, most are not. This is my work laptop when I'm on the road (I'm a composer and producer), and most of the "ill-conceived junk" is stuff I need to do my work.

As for the hosts file, I modified that myself to keep a specific website from being accessed. As I don't really need it to be blocked anymore I went into the hosts file and put it back to its "correct" state.

As for doing a clean install and then reinstalling every piece of non-Apple executable code one app at a time, I don't have that kind of time to trouble shoot. I need some practical advice suited for the way I use my MBP. For example, might I try booting it off an external drive, or pulling my main drive out and using it to start up another MBP to rule out a hardware problem?

Also it would be nice to know under what circumstances a MBP running Yosemite could shut down without flagging the system that something had gone wrong. The OS usually "knows" when it's been shut down improperly; why not in this case?

As for the RAM, I did buy it from OWC. Although the specs are different from the original, I usually trust OWC and they assured me they were compatible.

Finally, my computer has never "slowed down" as I have it configured. It still runs briskly. The shutdowns are the only problem, and they happened "overnight" as it were. If it is a software problem, it may be a conflict with 10.10.3., so I would think the first thing to do would be to roll back to the previous OS.

Unfortunately this advice doesn't do me much good. Although some of the extensions, daemons, etc. are ones I could get rid of, most are not. This is my work laptop when I'm on the road (I'm a composer and producer), and most of the "ill-conceived junk" is stuff I need to do my work.

But 33% of it is not. 19 out of 57 of your Launch Daemons and Agents are antivirus and "clean up" software. If I add Cocktail, it is 26 out of 57, or 45%. You have 6 different software packages that aren't even compatible with Yosemite at all. They aren't running or are only partially running. Any one of those could be causing the problem.

Apple makes devices for a consumer market. If you need a computer for work, you can't treat it like a consumer machine. You can't apply Apple upgrades until you are sure that all of the existing 3rd party software you need it compatible. If it isn't, you can't upgrade. Apple doesn't care much for even its own professional apps. How much do you think Apple cares about 3rd party professional apps?

I strongly suggest you remove any software you don't really need. The software listed in your EtreCheck report are things that are always running in the background or could potentially run at any time. The report also lists those that are not fully compatible with Yosemite. Those need to be updated. I can't guarantee that will solve the problem, but it is all you can do.
