force photos to search for faces
Is there a way to force Photos to search for faces, or will it only do it automatically when I have opened a "folder" of someone's face?

Photos searches for Faces in all photos all the time. There is no way to turn this off.
Sometime the automatic search does not find a face, even when the face seems to be clearly visible. In such a case, a button in the Info window (Command-I) will allow you too manually add a found face circle. Faces added this way are are shown in the Faces album but are not used by the algorithm which defines the search for this specific face.
I recently returned from a long trip and have accrued about 4gigs of photos all happily in the Photos app but none of the Faces have been recognised and none come up on suggestions. If the app " searches for Faces in all photos all the time" any ideas why mine isn't?
Give it time - the face search takes place in the background and with a lot of photos it might take a day or even more (longer is the computer is sleeping or off at times)

I came back 3 months ago!! It is not recognising any photos from the trip at all. I also went and took a load of photos a couple of weekends ago of family and friends all of which have face already stored and it hasn't picked up any of them. It appears not to be working in the background at all, is there a way to force it? .......think I know the answer 😟
Whether you edit a photo with third-party extensions or the built-in tools Photos offers, you can always revert back to the photo's original state. Double-click the photo to open it in single view, click Edit, then click Revert to Original.
Lets start back with details - what version of the OS and of Photos do you have?
LN
Yosemite 10.10.5
Photos Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0)
As an aside I read if you turn the photos clockwise the back again to forces the app to look for the faces....... anything worth a try, 14000 photos never heard the fan work so hard.
You are way behind - the current software is El Captain OS X 10.11.6 and Photos 1.5 - there are tons of new features and bug fixes in the six updates you are missing - updating is very possibly the solution to your issue - as always vrify that your configuration works with the upgrade and always backup prior to upgrading

OK
I tried upgrading to El Captain but never seem to be able to manage the whole 6GB download, bit surprised at the photos app no upgrades have let themselves be known. I did say it was a long trip 🙂
P.S. Photo app crashed rotating the photos back 😟
It actually worked rotating the photos I have now got faces popping up. However as the app crashed turning them back I now have a completely jumbled library of some turned some no, going to take me forever to turn the all the right way now. Any way to undo the last action?
Probably best to restore your backup and do the rotations in smaller groups - around 1000 is a good number - crashes can leave other issues that do not show up for a while
And Photos is part of the OS not a seperate app - it ony is available and ony upgrades as part of the OS install
