I have tried using my i-pod earphones and other earphones.....very little sound even when I have the volume pushed to the maximum. I hear nothing if there is noise in the background. Yet without tzhe earphones...blasting! Is my i-pad 2 defective with regard to the use of earphones?

Do you hear anything at all? I had this problem before where I couldn't hear it at all. The problem for me was i had unclocked lock rotation and it did something with my sound and turned on the mute button
Make sure you have fully inserted them into the device.
SOrry-- mixed up replies between you and another member. I checked the lock rotation....it is not on mute. At least it helped me check one more thing. Actually I do hear but it is very soft and that is with volume at max! Without the earphones..it is way too loud to keep the volume at max. I don't know why I cannot use earphones and hear well.
I have double checked pushing the i-pod and my Sony earphones as far as they will go. There is some sound heard but not loud enough even though the volume is up to max!
That suggests to me that there is a problem with the jack on the iPad. If the earbuds and earphones work OK on other devices, there must be a problem with the iPad. Make an appointment at an Apple Store and as for help.
