mail 124 headers totally wrong

My mail app has a folder with 124 emails and each one has "To" and "Subject" incorrect. They are correct in that I have sent or received as per "To" and "Subject" but inside the email is another completly different email subject and person.

Can I rejog the memory, resynchronize or such and clean these up?

In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. With that folder open, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post to let me see the names of the files and folders it contains -- you may disguise any mailbox names you wish to keep private.

One of those folders should be the "a" folder under which all your custom mailboxes appear in Mail. Post also the contents of the "a" folder, as well as the contents of the "in.mbox" folder that should correspond to the folder that has the problem in Mail.

Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

Well, the contents of the Messages folders themselves waren’t necessary.

Please confirm that the following are the contents of the In.mbox folder that has the problem:

_Archived Items
Info.plist
Messages

This is rather unusual and messy -- there should be no _Archived Items folder there. Also, are you saying that there is yet another Messages folder within _Archived Items?

Oct 26, 2006 2:47 PM in response to Ron Cooper1

1. Quit Mail.

2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example.

3. Move _Archived Items out of In.mbox, to the root level of the “a” folder, like your other custom mailboxes.

4. Rename _Archived Items to Archived.mbox.

5. Open Mail. Both In and Archived should appear as independent mailboxes within the “a” folder in Mail. If that’s not the case, post back with your observations.

6. Rebuild both In and Archived by selecting them one at a time and doing Mailbox > Rebuild.
