Q: Migrating 200gb iphoto to photos, will it be too large?

I am debating on migrating my iPhoto library from mavericks that is 200gb. Will that be too large of a library. If it isn't how long will the whole process take? How long will the update to Yosemite take? how long will the iPhoto update take, and most importantly how long will it take to migrate my 200gb library into photos?

And if I decide to buy 500gb of space of icloud photos, would that transfer over ok? and how long would it take to get my whole library into the cloud? I heard it could take days. One last question. would it support all video and picture formats on my iPhoto library, like MVI, and jpeg as it all crosses over?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), running iphoto 9.5.1

How long any of it takes depends on a whole lot of information that you don't give us - how powerful is your machine, your internet connection speeds and all that. But it won't be too big a library.

This document describes, how your iPhoto Library will be migrated, the supported formats, and how iPhoto items will be mapped to Photos items:

How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

200GB should be o.k., but depending on the traffic at Apple's servers and your upload speed, it can take several days to upload.

    • Before migrating the iPhoto library make a current backup, just in case there is a problem with the migration and you need to start over.
    • The migration will go smoother, if the library has no problems, so use the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools to repair the permissions and to repair the database in iPhoto before you do the migration.
      • To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPjhotot Library to launch the iPhotos Library First aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
      • The select "Repair database".  Repeat with "repair Permissions".
    • You should be aware, that the new Photos.app does not yet have batch changing tools for titles and captions. Do any batchchanging while you still have the library in iPhoto. Also assign any missing Places, since you cannot do it in Photos, but the library organisation will be better with Places assigned.

I would try in two steps - first migrate the library to Photos and explore the migrated library. And only after you are satisfied that all migrated well, start the upload to iCloud.

Thanks for your reply, I was looking forward to hearing from you..my machine is just your standard 2011 imac, I haven't made any upgrades to it. I think it has like 2gb of memory, not sure of the processor, my internet connection is about 20mgb/sec on a good day. but really just looking for general time frames of each process, not exact numbers. But you think that size of library is really ok? The dude at the genius bar recommended to me that it might be too big and that some "meta data" could get lost in translation. so it has kind of scared me away from transferring my whole library.

Thank you very kindly! this helps a ton. You wouldn't know by chance the actual formats that can transfer over from iPhoto to photos though would you. I checked out that link and it didn't tell me all they types of formats that are supported in photos. For example, I have a ton of .MVI, and .MOV, jpeg and mpeg videos and photos from an old camera point and shoot (canon powershot), and some videos from and pics from an old LG chocolate phone on my iPhoto library. I just wanted to know if those will transfer too.
