Apr 24, 2015 4:20 PM in response to Dean O'Keeffeby TheAmazingLoaf,The other suggestion worked. Change your settings in Messages> send & receive > start new conversations from... To be your phone number, then delete all conversations between the two of you on your phones and watches, then send a message from one to the other and then when you go back into friends on your watch the icon should be there

Apr 24, 2015 5:53 PM in response to Mase Lucasby john.l.roberts,We have resolved the issue by signing out of iMessage on the iPhone and signing in with the Apple ID that is using iCloud, if it differs from your itunes and App Store apple ID. We're pretty sure the discrepancy is with iMessage accounts. Hope this helps!

Apr 25, 2015 1:16 AM in response to Mase Lucasby Maxtoid,Just wanted to add this for anyone that it might help: My friend and I worked on this literally all day. We tried everything mentioned in all forms (clearing message history on phones and watches, turning iMessage off and on for both phones, changing emails and numbers, etc). Nothing worked.
Finally, in desperation, I went into my watch (the watch that couldn't initiate messages to the other one, because it didn't appear that they had an apple watch) and I removed that contact from favorites on the apple watch app on my iPhone, then re-added them to favorites. Not only did it sync their picture this time (no friends have pictures on my watch from initial sync... Hmm...), but now digital touch works!

Apr 25, 2015 2:57 AM in response to Maxtoidby Dean O'Keeffe,I've now tried all of the suggestions and none seem to work! I've reset the watch, un-paired the phone and watch and re-paired it, i've changed the iMessage settings to send from the phone number. The iTunes, iCloud names all match, are there any other suggestions? I'm just not getting the DT option displaying at all, I feel a trip to Apple coming on!

Apr 25, 2015 4:25 AM in response to Mase Lucasby Asava,We had exactly the same problem. Here is what solved it for us:
Disabled iMessage on the iphone
Enabled iMessage on the iphone again
Then you should receive a message informing you that both a new iphone and a new apple watch have been signed up for iMessage
We then restarted the devices (don't know if this was a necessary step, but we did it anyway) and then it worked.

Apr 25, 2015 6:07 AM in response to Asavaby Dean O'Keeffe,Finally resolved, it seemed once the other party who I was trying to send a DT message to changed their iMessage settings and sent me a message, my watched asked me if I wanted to add them to "friends" it all worked. As far as my watch was concerned nobody had an apple watch!
I think Apple should change their tag line from "it just works" to "it just works once you've spent hours trying to fix it!!"

Apr 25, 2015 6:27 AM in response to Dean O'Keeffeby smcarl,My husband and I had the same problem. We finally fixed it by deleting each other's text message history, making sure our contact information matched and that our messages came from our phone numbers, and deleting/re-adding each other to our friends in the actual Watch app. I'm not sure which of these actually did it, since we were in a frenzy of "let's try everything," but those steps finally got us to making DT work.

Apr 26, 2015 12:38 PM in response to Mase Lucasby DarKOrange,Finally after 2 days of research here is what solved our problem (my friend not receiving my DT, me receiving his).
I Added his main Apple ID to his contact file on my iPhone (Which is a @mac.com address) and he configured iMessage to use this address instead of one of the aliases in @me.com
Now it is working both ways.

Apr 28, 2015 4:51 PM in response to ejbowesby EpicMouse,my boyfriend and I were having the same issue where I could send to him but he couldn't send to my watch. Turned out some how his iMessage on his iPhone was turned off. We deactivated iMessage and digital touches now send from his phone! thanks for the iMessage clue!

Apr 28, 2015 6:37 PM in response to Mase Lucasby anupfromcary,I am having a similar issue due to sharing of iCloud account. I have left a feedback to apple. If both you and your partners have different iCloud accounts and both the watches are paired with the two accounts then there are no issues. Its a software design flaw according to me. watch should use iCloud account used for iMessage or FaceTime instead of the main iCloud account
