Lost mode Override?

I lost my iphone 5s recently.

There was no screen lock, and my Apple ID was configured using my gmail account. After the theft, I initiated the Lost mode and SOund mode using icloud, and the message showing for a few days was "sound mode and lost mode are pending, will be activated once iphone is online".

Now my phone was switched on 2 days back, and the Seuence of mails on the phone is-

How to reset your Apple ID 1043 AM

A sound was played on your phone 1045 AM

Your password as been reset 1046 AM

Find my iphone has been disabled 1046 AM

I ave not yet purchased a new phone and did not see the mails immediately.

Now how was sound played but lost mode not activated?

What can apple to do help me here? The security was very flimsy, did no one envisage such a situation?

My data is still on the phone! Including photos, conversations, and mails that were downloaded until then.

Google also let me down- I had gone to last account activity and signed out of all sessions, but clearly my iphone session was still signed in wen the thief switched on my phone.

Can someone tell me where I can write to Apple and Google? My data is clearly compromised.

Someone found your phone. Assuming you had service cancelled on the SIM, or if they removed the SIM, without a passcode, they were able to get into the device and find out what your Apple ID was. They then submitted a password reset request on the Apple Website and were able to receive the email using your phone. They then turned off find my iPhone.

Your Apple ID has been compromised. That is a much bigger problem right now than what's on your phone.

That depends on whether you had already set up a device specific password for the account on the phone.

What you need to do now is change ALL of your passwords. Set up two step authentication on every account that supports it, contact your bank regarding your accounts possibly being compromised, and if you had a work email account set up on it, inform your employer.

Oh, and file a police report regarding the theft.

Since the iPhone was not locked, just open the Mail app when you request to reset AppleID password.

Make sure you use a passcode on your new iPhone.

Would changing my gmail password have made any difference?

At the time it would have, yes.

The iPhone Mail app would not have been able to get the password reset email from Apple.

As soon as they disabled FindMyiPhone, they simply restored the iPhone as new with their own AppleID.
