Fan going on and off every few seconds

Hi,

the fan on my 21.5" iMac, Late 2013 is going on and off every few seconds. Sometimes it's running at full speed for a longer time. No apps are open. I reset the SMC – no change. Any help is much appreciated. The latest OS X is installed.
