In Pages 5.5.3, How to stop automatic numbering of Lines & Paragraphs?

How can I stop the A. B. on the extreme left of the page?

Anything I try screws up the rest of the formatting.

I see nothing in Prefernces to stop this.

Menu > Pages > Preferences > General > Editing > uncheck Automatically detect lists

No go! Here is what I got, even after a restart and opening a new document in Pages, no check mark in Preference: --> still the undesired A,B:

It doesn't change existing lists.

Are you saying it still forms a list from text marked as Bullets & List > None, as you type?

Click in the A./B. text.

What does it say in Bullets & Lists?

Bullets & List had a Name. When I change to None the extra stuff disappeared. Thank you!
