How does my iPod synch 11GB of music when it is using only 7.35GB of data?

iTunes says my songs total 11 GB. When I plug in my iPod Nano 6^th Gen. (8 GB) to the computer, the summary page says my iPod songs total 7.35 GB, with 1.11 GB free. How can there be such disparity in this data?
