Can I remove and clone an SSD from a mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro?

If I remove the SSD from a mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro, is it possible to clone the drive using a drive adapter to USB attached to another Mac? The Macbook Pro I want to clone has a problem with the display and it's still under AppleCare warranty. Apple will repair the problem, but I need to clone and back-up the drive prior to turning the machine into Apple. I have 2 SATA-to-USB drive adapters, but they don't see to connect with the (I believe) micro-SATA connector on the SSD. Any suggestions?
