How to drop files in directly in folder without subfolders opening up?

Whenever I drag and drop a file into a folder, the folder opens up and I have to navigate through subfolders to find where to drop it. How can I simply drop a file into a folder without subfolders opening up? I just want to drop a file in a folder like in the early days of Apple!

OS X Mavericks (10.9.3)

That is the Spring Loaded folders feature. Under Finder menu -> Preferences:

User uploaded file

When unchecked, it doesn't work at all.
