Why does iTunes keep asking to load the same version?

Why does iTunes keep asking to load the same version? I keep getting the message that there is a new version of iTunes and do I want to install it. it says version. 12.1.2.27. If I say yes it downloads and installs. At the end it says installation complete. Then it checks for new software and again finds the same version. So I have to cancel. What a pain. Any ideas out there.
