Messages is updating... (never finishes)

I'm trying to use Messages on my MacBook Pro (Yosemite 10.10.3). While I get Notifications when I get a message (same as on my iPhone), I can't open the Messages application to respond. When I do, I get this error:

"Messages is updating...

The Messages database is being upgraded, please wait while it finishes or Quit Messages and relaunch it later."

Problem is - the updating never stops. Yes, I have a lot of contacts (2200+), but it's not that much data. Do I need to delete a .plist file or some other action that restarts this process? Any help is appreciated.
