my photos in ipad are gone after failed sync with iphoto

I tried to sync my photos from my iPad mini to my iPhoto library. After a while the sync failed and now all my photos are gone and I have ~60 (out of 100's) thumbnails left but grey out. Also, the only thumbnails that remain are for mov. Can someone please help me with this issue? What happened and what can I do to get my pictures back.
