Photos lost hundreds of pictures!!

After the update to 10.10.3 on my main system, my photo library is missing enormous numbers of pictures! About 300 pictures from our vacation in 2013 are simply gone. Who nows what else is missing!! I should be able to roll this back with time machine, but how do I keep photos form doing this again? Can I uninstall Photos ?
