So I got my iPhone 5 as a present for my birthday and it had already past the 2 year warranty. Recently I updated it to the 8.0.3 and my phone has been dead for two days now, and I've been charging it ever since and it still hasn't turned on

Have you tried a soft-reset (i.e. a reboot) to see if that gets it to boot up ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo will hopefully appear and it'll boot up.
I've tried all that reboot stuff and nothing seems to be working like its still charging but hasn't turn on.
Have you got a different cable and charger that you could try ? If not then is there an Apple store nearby ?
