Change Finder to default 'sort by kind'

Hi

Am trying to change finder to default 'arrange by kind'. Have gone through the usual process of right clicking in finder, clicking show view options, selecting 'arrange by kind' and then clicking 'use as default' but it doesn't change anything

Any ideas?

Thanks

MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2014), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Do a backup.

In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.

If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.

chflags nohidden ~/Library/

You will need to do that after any updates.
