can't load desktop and screen saver preferences

When I downloaded version 10.10.4 of Yosemite and went to Preferences, I was unable to load desktop and screen saver preferences and I have a big white screen with some words on it, or I have Yosemite mountain. I want my own pictures displayed, not these. So what happened and what can I do to fix it?
