Upgrading Memory

I am using 21.5inch 2011 Mid iMac 2.7HHz Intel iCore i5, my Mac memory is 2GB+2GB RAM 1333 MHz DDr3. I would like to upgrade my Mac to more than 8GB RAM, will it work if I bought 4+4GB RAM and fill with the empty slot adding with the current 2+2GB RAM, Or should purchase only new 2GB + 2GB.. Please advice.

You should purchase two 8GB modules if you can afford it; otherwise, buy two 4GB modules.

Thank you Niel,

Is it possible to purchase 4GB(1pc)+8GB(1pc)and use with the current 2GB +2GB so total will be 16Gb

Maximum is 16GB

iMac recommends only 2GB or 4GB please read below

Maximum memory

16 GB

Note: For the iMac (Late 2009) models, you can use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot. For the iMac (Mid 2010) and iMac (Mid 2011) models, use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot.

I strongly suggest purchasing the memory modules from Crucial.com or otherworldcomputing.com. They are the two most respected suppliers of Mac memory. I find Crucial to be a little less expensive than OWC. Crucial has excellent customer support, guarantee their modules to work and have good warranties.

Too many users have reported getting modules that meet the Apple specs for their model which wouldn't work.
