2007 imac running slow on 10.9

Hi,

My computer recently began running very slow and has intermittent periods where the windows are laggy or non-responsive. Can anyone help diagnose what's going on? I ran Etrecheck and got the following results:

Problem description:

Windows are very laggy. Screen is not updating in real time when I move the mouse / toggle to a different window.

Before you do anything backup and test the backup to make sure it works!

The primary thing I see is your HD is almost full, 85GB isn't that much free space. Consider move large libraries (photos, music & movies) to an external HD.

Also the HD, may be failing. The only test you have likely is Apple's Hardware Test which is located on the original 10.4 (Tiger) disc 2. Follow the direction in Hardware Test to run it. Run in extended mode 2-3 times back to back. The reason for running it multiple times is AHT does not always find errors after the first or second pass, however when it does they are correct. If errors appear call an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for an appointment. You can begin finding one in your area by clicking AASP Locator. Note I did not say to take it to an Apple Store, due the advanced age of the computer Apple will no longer service it.

Good luck.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Your hard drive isn't that full that you should be experiencing the kinds of issues you're experiencing.

82 GBs is still a significant amount of space.

There was a time when Macs only had 60-80 GB hard drives and OS X ran perfectly fine.

You start having OS issues when the hard drive free space dips below 20 GBs or less.

Try this.

Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hogs on the OS X system.

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95319?hl=en

If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.

The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.

I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.

Ok, as I said before I ran AHT 3 times and no trouble was found. I have now freed up an additional 80 GB of free space (160/250 GB free) through moving stuff to my external drive. I've also verified time capsule is backing up correctly.

It definitely seemed to be running more smoothly but this morning I ran into the issue again where the system was basically unresponsive and the windows were very slow to move/update. The system actual got stuck when I tried to restart it, so I ended up having to hard reset by pushing the power button.

Any idea of what's going on? Should I ditch Chrome, as MichelPM noted?

From your EC report: remove all Western Digital software. It has always slowed my Macs, both Intel-based and the older PowerPC Macs, and never offered me any benefit.

From your 5-5 report, note the significant appearance of Google Chrome, which you have been advised to removed, at the top of the report. This ominous message in teh first three hits may explain some of the problem:

While not abnormal for debuggers, this increases system memory footprint until the target exits.

People with newer, more powerful Macs that have faster processors and lots of RAM can probably get away with Chrome, but yours is likely old enough to struggle with it.

2007 imac running slow on 10.9
