The document format is too old. Download the free LibreOffice, and then open this Word '95 document with it. Then export to a different filename.doc, or filename.docx, and then open in Pages.

Thanks, Viking.

I copied the files to a thumb drive and went to the local library which has Word 2010 and converted them there.

Unfortunately, I didn't figure out how to do it en masse, so I just did them individually, but, problem solved!
