Upgrade old iMac

I had an old iMac that I recently gave to my parents. I think I bought it in 2008. I listed the OS and all the hardware below. The problem is many of the programs they want to use require at least a 10.6 OS. Based on the information below, does the computer have the required hardware? Also, how can I get the most recent OS for the computer?

I have a machine very similar to yours. I have upgraded the RAM to 6Gb and the OS to Snow leopard. I am very happy with what I have. But you can go further ... to Yosemite, but Neil's link will explain why you need to check out your facilities. Snow Leopard will probably not be updated further so you will need to be cautious with your browsing; security is all.
