Lately my 2008 Mac Pro is slow. Applications are slow to open and I hear a lot of disc activity. I did a repair permissions but that didn't help.
Do you think my disc on the verge of failing?

You need more RAM, but first get rid of the AdWare.

Okay will remove the adware that but why do I need more RAM when it's been running fine for years until now? Also the problem occurs when Safari is not running.

Because you have the bare minimum RAM for Yosemite, and it uses as much RAM as possible to provide better/faster performance. Previous operating systems were not as hungry for RAM.

4 GB is really the min for Yosemite but it will run slowly. At least 8 GB is recommended.
I have been running Yosemite for a while now. I guess the latest updates have bloated it somehow. I'll get more RAM

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.
