Restore menu bar on Mac Book Pro running Yosemite.

Every time I update , I lose the bar at the top of the screen. After updating I I have to use the cursor the get the bar to show. In" view " the always show tool bar is checked but in light grey. When I hit escape the screen shrinks to half size and the top bar does stay up. Thanks for any suggestions.
