How to clear 741 phantom "sent" emails?

My wife's 5s shows 741 sent emails, but there are none shown when you open the sent folder. We've tried turning off the account in settings, restarting the phone, and then turning on the account. We've also cleared all the emails on the email provider's server.

She can't back up to iCloud, because these sent emails are apparently tying up 3.4GB of memory. Any suggestions?

First, reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.

If this does not work try to delete the mail account, restart the phone and set it up again.

If still no luck, restore from the latest backup:
