I just set up my husbands iCloud, it merged his contacts and now they are not on his phone. This is way more difficult than necessary. How do I get his contacts back?

WWhy did my husbands contacts disappear when I set up his iCloud on the 5s?? Apple is making this way more difficult than anyone else.
