Photos from Photos app not accessible in iMovie 10.0.8

When using iMovie 10.0.8, Photos in the new Photos app are not showing up in the Photos heading in the library. Photos under the iPhoto heading are accessible.

Using OS X 10.10.3

Thanks for any help.

I had this same problem as well, but after a few frustrating hours realised that there was an option to import media to iMovie (from files on the computer). It's in the upper left-hand corner of the app if you're in a project and looks like an arrow pointing down. I'm not sure if this is something that everyone knows, but hopefully it helps.

I tried these steps which you described. But the result is not as hoped. In iMovie i still do not see more photos from Photos (only a small selection). But even worse within Photos most of my photos have dissapeared. I only see the few photos which I could also see in iMovie. So far I am not able to retrieve my photos back into Photos. What steps should I perform to get my photos back in Photos?

I found another solution that works because honestly none of the solutions in this entire thread worked for me and are likely out of date as of Sept 2017 running High Sierra. Even the post that said to ignore all the other incorrect solutions DIDN'T work for me either.

What worked for me was simple and had nothing to do with the other Photos app.

While holding Command + Option key click the iMovie app. It will ask to reset preferences with the iMovie logo on the prompt. Accept it will treat iMovie like as if you opened it for the first time with the intro prompts explaining what is new and changed. Upon creating a project I was able to see my entire photo library.

It's fixed. Go me for figuring this out on my own after trying someone's suggestion to reset settings using Command + Option for the Photos app, so I tried it with iMovie instead and this worked.

I have the same problem where all of the sudden (i think ever since the High Sierra update) my System Photo Library isn't visible in iMovie or Final Cut Pro. I reached the web for fixes and have only come across one so far where a person describes creating a new Photo Library, switching it to the "System Photo Library", then deleting the new one and turning the original library back to the "System Photo Library". This didn't work. iMovie and Final Cut still do not show any of my photos/videos. My iTunes library is available to be used in those programs though. This is a big problem for me.

Still got this problem too. Tried all the 'solutions' and still iMovie sees the old iPhoto Library and will not open the newer Photos library. I've even deleted the old iPhotos app yet iMovie still pulls the library from my photos folder on start up. I've reset iMovie still no joy. I've created new library's in Photos and made them the system library and deleted them and relinked it back to my Photos Library making that the system library again and iMovie still only shows the iPhotos Library option in the Librarys list. Getting fed up now.

An OS update would likely fix it but don't want to risk updating to High Sierra at the moment as I'm too busy and don't want to risk conflict with other apps, this is already sucking up too much of my time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Running El Capitan 10.11.3, iMovie 10.0.4 and Photos 1.5.

To summarise: I want to open iMovie and see my Photos Library on the left, not the older iPhotos Library.

Solution for me was to install iMovie app 10.1.5. Version 10.0.4 wouldn't recognise Photos 1.5. Problem solved and working as it did before, now with access to my old iPhotos and newer Photos Libraries through the iMovie app. Think my problem was due to a hard drive crash coupled with OS and software updates over the years. Anyway, back to work at last : )

I finally figured this out. In Photos, select “Preferences”. There is a selection to “Use as System Photo Library”. Click on this to allow whatever photo library you are using when you opened Photos to be used in iMovie and other applications. You can always open Photos and use other libraries, but only the one you are using as the “System Photo Library” will be recognized by other applications such as iMovie and also, I believe, in iCloud.

Hope this will solve the mystery for you, too.
