May 5, 2015 1:35 PM in response to RainyfromPortlandby gfarnott,Apple Watch is designed to notify you to move more, so if you spend a lot of time standing still, you may or may not get notified to move. There are ways to calibrate the activity apps so that it can better learn your habits, but the bottom line is that it takes a bit of time to get to know you and your habits. Here's the Apple Support document on how to calibrate Watch for Activity and Workouts: Calibrating your Apple Watch for improved Workout and Activity accuracy - Apple Support
I'm not affiliated with iMore in any way, but they have 2 short articles about Activity that really helped me.

May 5, 2015 1:41 PM in response to gfarnottby Manny1299,Thanks for the tips...
When I do stand up, I walk around for at least 2 minutes (instead of the 1 they recommend).
I saw the calibration page, and I did follow those steps. I take a walk at lunch in an open field, using the Workout app, so it should be calibrated by now.
Hoping for an update soon.

May 8, 2015 8:43 AM in response to Manny1299by josekimber1,Calibrating the activity app is all very well, but just about every time you call support they tell you to unfair the Watch and/or reset it. As I understand it, doing either of these things will cause you to lose al those calibrations.
I am baffled by the Stand app. It works quite a lot of the time but others, it simply doesn't and it is quite frustrating to get a stand reminder at 00.50 and to get up and move around (in my case, going up and downstairs) only still not getting the credit for that hour.
Yesterday, I was in the kitchen preparing tea, having previously been upstairs and not having been sitting for at least 30 minutes, when I got a stand reminder. I went up and downstairs and still did not get the credit.
my conclusion is that this app is initially somewhat flawed and has been rather over-hyped by Apple in terms of what it can do. It is rather disappointing as this is one of the main reasons I wanted this watch, and I hope that Apple comes out with an update to fix these issues very soon.

May 8, 2015 12:59 PM in response to josekimber1by J03k,Your description of the issue closely matches mine. but I'm very pleased with the watch in general. I held out buying a stand-alone heart monitor hoping Apple would integrate this function and it seems to work very well. Also I like the convenience of quickly seeing communicactions from friends and family, using Apple pay and using Siri to check scores, etc. My expectation is that the Watch experience will be similar to that of the first iPhone—there are bugs and shortcomings that will be improved with updates.

May 9, 2015 3:05 AM in response to J03kby josekimber1,Having done an online chat with Apple yesterday, they did say that the Watch 'has a few issues" and that this problem with the Watch not recognising standing sometimes is one of them. They are promising and update soon which hopefully will resolve at least some of these problems.
One thing I spotted this morning is that it does seem that if you are standing up at the turn of the hour, it does not pick that up. I was walking around at 9am this morning and it did not register, I still got a 10 minute warning at 9.50, when I was sitting. I then stood up and moved around for a while and it registered it. It certainly seems to need more than 1 minute to register the activity and I'm still not sure how active you need to be. I think the longer we use it and monitor what it is doing the more we will know what causes it to react in a certain way.
At least all this is making me more active!!

May 9, 2015 8:33 AM in response to RainyfromPortlandby SamMelone,Hi,
had the same problem. Just wipe your Apple Watch and it will work again! Good luck!
-
May 9, 2015 2:18 PM in response to SamMeloneby josekimber1,I'm not sure what you mean by "wipe the watch"?
As Apple seem to be admitting that there is an issue with the Activity software, I don't think there is a cure till they issue an update. Till then we will have to put up with these quirks.

May 10, 2015 5:53 PM in response to RainyfromPortlandby tj4kids,I've been having all the same problems with the standing and tried the solutions suggested without any luck. I can be standing for several hours, but if I happen to be sitting at the 50 minute mark, it will remind me to stand. Sometimes it reminds me to stand even though I'm already standing. It doesn't seem to count how long I stand at all. I've found for exercise to count I have to go into the workout app and log it as "other." If I log it as a "walk" or "run," it won't count toward my exercise goal. I usually don't buy products when they're brand new. I guess I should have waited awhile for this even though I really wanted one!

May 10, 2015 6:17 PM in response to tj4kidsby Tokyo User,All,
I've been meeting my movement, exercise and stand goals every day in the Acticity app.
To Receive the standing credit it's not enough to just stand. You must stand AND walk for at least one minute. Walking around the house doesn't seem to do it, as you must walk a noticeable distance. In the office, I'll walk all the way across the floor and relieve a "you did it "notification. If I'm at home, I'll actually leave the house and walk for a bit to get credit.
To get credit for calories and exercise, you don't necessarily need to be in the Workout app, but you DO need to walk or run AND get your heart rate up. I'm a reasonably fit 40-something and I find if my heart rate goes over 80-85, I'll get credit for Movement and exercise from the activity app.
I've has the calorie goal set 600 and I'll usually close get that after roughly 60 minutes of exercise.
This may be different than other exercise trackers which just track steps. I think that Apple Watch is tracking both steps and heart rate so it may be stricter than other trackers. But more, better quality mocement is what you want it to motivate to do anyway, right?

May 10, 2015 6:26 PM in response to Tokyo Userby mjcowley,I agree that you must stand AND walk to trigger a response from the watch. However, this does not explain the issues many have posted about in this discussion. Similar to what others have said, I can stand and go for a 10 minute jog immediately after that 50 minute notification and still not get credit for standing. The issue seems to be less frequent after I reboot the watch, but tends to return after time.

May 10, 2015 7:17 PM in response to mjcowleyby Tokyo User,It's now 11:10 in Tokyo. I've been up since 5:30 am and have received standing credit for seven hours without recieving any notifications from Apple Watch as I've been moving all day. Today's activity was a 10km run, 10km bike ride to work and movement in the office to attend meetings, get water, etc.
Apple Watch notifies me to stand only at the 50 minute mark each hour when it hasn't detected any brisk movement from the top of the hour. If you get the notification to stand and you move briskly for one minute you should receive another notification that says "You did it!". Only then will it give you standing credit for the hour. No notification, no credit.
I think 'standing' is a misnomer. When they say stand, they really mean, move briskly away from the place that you've been for the last 50 minutes.
-
May 10, 2015 7:21 PM in response to Tokyo Userby mjcowley,As I said, after the 50 minute notification I can stand and go for a 10 minute jog, but still not get standing credit. I'm sure this qualifies as moving briskly from the place I've been.

May 10, 2015 7:24 PM in response to mjcowleyby Tokyo User,Have you ever received the "You did it" notification after
you received the "Time to stand" notification?
