Q: Watch failing to notify me to stand up, doesn't track when I stand up

Got my watch yesterday, and aside from three times total in the past 24+ hours of having it and wearing it, it doesn't alert me to stand up once per hour.

The watch also doesn't seem to track when I stand up of my own accord, be it to just stand up for a minute, or when I move around my house to get things done.

Is there something I need to do to get the watch to sense when I'm standing up, and to tell me to stand up once per hour? It alerted me 3 hours in a row, always at the 50 minute marker (such as 1:50, 2:50, etc) to stand up for a minute. Then it stopped.

I wear the watch as tight as possible.

Also, in iPhone settings, you need to have Privacy, Location Services on, with System Services, Motion calibration and detection on.

Yes, I have. It works more often than it fails, but it still fails.

It's not limited to after the 50 minute notification either. Sometime, I may have been walking between office buildings for the first 30 mins of an hour, sit down and than at 10 minutes to the next hour, get a notification that I've been a bad boy and need to stand. It'll show that I've burned calories during that first 30 minutes, but somehow thinks I burnt them while sitting down...

If motion detection was off, it wouldn't be working at all. As I mentioned, it's only failing some of the time.

This document discusses the required settings. Also, if you hard reboot the watch (Press digital crown and friends button at the same time) I would also hard reboot iPhone as well (Home and power button at the same time).  In your case it seems wonky, but for some other complaints on this thread it seems like a usage issue.

As I previously mentioned, hard resetting or unpinning will cause your Watch to lose all its calibration settings.  As the watch is supposed to "learn" the more you use it, this is not a good thing so resetting or unpairing should only be done as a last resort.  You will then have to start all over again with the calibration.  I also think that the resetting/unpairing thing only works for a time, if at all, if you are having these problems, which strangely don't seem to affect everyone.

I spoke to Apple support and they admitted there is a software issue with is app so the best thing to do is to soldier on and wait for the update.

I have found that if you get the stand warning and you're already standing up (that's happened to me), you need to actually sit for a minute or so and then try standing and moving again.  I suspect that there's a bug somewhere in the software that detects whether or not you are standing.  Another possible issue is inadequate contact between the watch and your skin.  The watch is quite big on me and I have difficulty getting the band tight enough, if I tighten it another notch it is too tight and difficult to fasten because the loop of the band goes too far underneath.  my experience is that it doesn't seem to have a lot to do with how vigorously you are moving.

I have the opposite problem; after turning the stand-up alerts off because I found them extremely irritating when concentrating on my work, my watch keep popping up reminders.  Taps me on the wrist and beeps too.  I turned off absolutely everything that can be turned off, but that had no effect at all.

Also, sometimes the stand-up alert comes on right after I sit down after standing up and/or walking around for some time!

My stand feature seemed to work fine for the first week I started using it, then today, although I was up and about most of the afternoon, it never recorded any further standing action.  Later in the afternoon, I lay down for an hour and when I woke up it coincidentally popped up the reminder to stand, so I did.  I got up walked around, brushed my teeth, but never heard the ding feedback confirming that it was recording my activity, which indicated it did not record my activity.  I checked the Activity app to confirm it failed to post.  So, I just rebooted the watch (two button hard reset).  We'll see if it resumes normally next hour.

Oh, I also restarted my iPhone, to clear its RAM, but not a hard reset.

Just an update—after a couple of weeks or so this feature seems to be working much better for me.  I did adjust my behavior from just standing, when the notice came, to standing and walking. Also my walking distance seems to be more accurate.

According to my Apple Watch, I've been bed ridden since I've gotten it. I get no reminders to stand and when I do stand, or walk, my activity monitor does not track it.
